Be Strategic About Your Career Choice

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recognizes that the U.S. healthcare workforce does not reflect the nation’s increasing racial and ethnic diversity. Systemic and Educational Barriers, Financial Constraints, Lack of Mentorship and Representation, Discrimination and Unwelcoming Climates and Historical Factors, have contributed to the shortage of underrepresented minorities (URM) in health professions.

Why Should I Choose A
Healthcare Career?

The U.S. is experiencing a severe shortage of healthcare workers at every level.  This issue is a national crisis with an estimated shortage of 124,000 physicians by 2033, and a need to hire approximately 200,000 nurses each year to meet the demand.  In addition, the shortages in support personnel such as nursing assistants and home health aides is even more acute.  Millions of health professionals are needed to meet the national demand for healthcare workers.  According to researchers, the shortage is creating a corrosive cycle where “understaffing causes burnout and burnout causes more staff to leave, ultimately resulting in risks to patient care and safety.”

With US population shifts, the demand for underrepresented minority (URM) healthcare professionals is also at a crisis level.  Currently, African Americans/Blacks represent 13% of the US population; however, only 5.7% of doctors in the U.S. identify as Black.  The lack of diversity in other health professions is equally alarming and further exacerbates issues related to health disparities and health equity nationwide.  Therefore, the need (demand) to establish a competitive pool (supply) of minority students to recruit, train, graduate and place into healthcare practices is paramount to the nation’s healthcare system.

PRIMED Education Consulting has a strategic induction-based framework that includes programming and services to introduce high school students to the health professions and to prepare students for the rigorous training encountered in a health professions program. The Production Triangle’s Use in Career Development
